Why staying technical matters more, not less, now that AI is part of the toolbox

Ask an AI model to generate a wind turbine gearbox from a text prompt and it will hand you something that looks like a gearbox. It won't be your gearbox. The number of planetary gears will be wrong, the bearing housing will be a rough guess, and the cooling fins will be decorative rather than functional. It looks convincing in a thumbnail but it falls apart the moment an expert looks closer.

That's the risk of using AI in technical visualisation, it’s very good at producing something that looks correct to a novice but it has no idea whether it is right on a technical level. In our line of work - turbines, defence systems, renewable energy installations, industrial machinery – understanding the product and its technical details are the whole job.

We don’t start with AI. We start with something we can control

We never build technical content from a blank AI prompt. We start with an approved 3D asset: a model built from real CAD data, checked against the actual product, and signed off by someone who understands it. That's our foundation, and it's the one thing AI can't generate on its own. AI doesn't know what's inside the machine; it only knows what machines like that tend to look like from the outside.

Once a real foundation exists, AI becomes more controllable and genuinely useful. It can help us test moods and settings, explore a new story angle, produce background content, or generate variations for different channels - all without touching the part that has to be exactly right. Because we're always working from a controlled asset rather than a generated one, we can go back. If an output drifts, softens a detail, or invents something that isn't there, we can steer it back the other way. That's not something you can do with a pure AI generation. You can only do it when there's something real underneath driving the generation.

Understanding the system is the job. AI is just a tool.

A turbine component has to be correct, not approximately correct. A defence system has to be represented responsibly, which means knowing exactly what can and can't be shown. A renewable energy installation has to make an unfamiliar piece of infrastructure legible to someone who has never seen one. None of that comes from a model that generates plausible images. It comes from someone on our team who has read the CAD files, sat with the engineers, and understands what the product does before anything is created.

This is the part that hasn't changed. AI hasn't made technical understanding less important. If anything, it's raised the price of not having it, because AI will happily produce a beautiful, confident, wrong answer, and someone has to be technical enough to catch that before a client, a regulator, or a training audience ever sees it. In practice, that comes down to three things:

Keep the precise, precise
  • Technical details - valves, panel layouts, safety labels - are locked to approved reference, never generated.
  • AI only fills the space around them: mood, environment, motion.
  • Every output gets the same review a fully modelled scene would.
Fast only counts if it can change
  • Technical projects change: components get updated, safety details get corrected.
  • AI visuals are hardest to revise exactly when it matters most.
  • A controlled 3D workflow absorbs revisions because it's built for them.
Still our call, not the model's
  • AI adds tools: faster concepts, more reach, more room to explore.
  • It hasn't changed who decides what's accurate and what an audience needs.
  • That judgement is still ours - AI extends what we know, it doesn't replace knowing it.
